Message from the chairs

Dear delegates,

On behalf of the Chinese International School Model United Nations VII, we welcome you to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) at the seventh iteration of CISMUN. We are John Tang, a Year 12 student at Diocesan Boys’ School; and Estee Yu, a Year 12 student at Munsang College. We are all delighted to be chairing all of you and cannot wait to commence debate!

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is not actually a UN body. It is a regional multilateral organization with 10 members, which are located in Southeastern Asia. It is a place where Asian nations promote their own interests through political, economic, cultural, scientific, and social programmes. It also serves as a forum for resolving inter-state disputes and for coordinating policy. The decisions passed by the ASEAN are legally binding only for those countries that voted in favour of the decisions.

The Rules of Procedure used in the ASEAN will be the same as the Rules of Procedure found in regular UN committees to avoid overcomplicating things.

This chair report is written as a guide to assist you in your research, though we strongly recommend each delegate perform individual research specific to your countries to prepare ahead of committee session.

If you have any questions, feel free to email any of us. We look forward to seeing all of you in February in person.

Best wishes,

John Tang and Estee Yu
